Grr. Impatient as usual.
So I got my computer back, and for that yay! Although I'm used to my landlord's Windows machine by now, so this'll take some time.
As to the title: I'm really buckling down with Japanese over here. Finally. And I found a suggestion basically to drill sentences with readings and meanings on a website called All Japanese, All the Time. But I just found out for sure that I can't get anything out of it (without cramming till my head explodes) until either I learn way more kanji so I can guess meanings, or I know way more vocab so I can do it with sentences mostly in kana. And of course for either to happen would take a few months at least, even with mnemonics as per Remembering the Kanji (by James Heisig). This is frustrating, but I need to just take a breath and realise that I don't actually need Japanese right now. I can take my time a bit.
It also seems like most of the people on the Reviewing the Kanji site know way more Japanese than I do, having found Remembering the Kanji much later in their studies (or already being like halfway through). So many of the things they do I can't for a while.
The rest of the All Japanese, All the Time site is just general good advice on creating the fullest immersion you can short of living in a place where the language is spoken. I'm not going to religiously follow his advice though, because I am a writer. Cutting myself off from English, and thus that, would be serious setback. I fully intend, however, to use it as an excuse to engage in my Japan-related hobbies more often. And also to eat Japanese food and practice with chopsticks - right now, the food gets to my mouth, and that's all I can say for my skills in that department.
I also heard that if you rough it through the burnout that comes with studying a language really hard, it'll make things sort of crystalize into a more useable form. I'll try it sometime, but not now.
